Political Climate Heats Up in Northern Belize

Before the Gang Suppression Unit carried out their raids on the three houses, the day before, a fight between supporters of both major political parties in San Jose Village, Orange Walk District, was caught on camera. The video shows party supporters of the PUP and UDP attacking each other and so today, we asked Cervantes Jr. if he expects the hostility between party supporters to increase as November 4 gets closer.

RAMON CERVANTES JR

“As I understand, two of my supporters were coming out and they were attacked by the neighbors who were painting UDP signs.  One of them was hit with a stick a little above his wrist and the other one was stabbed with a nail that was on a piece of stick and they broke his windshield and that is where it started. I can’t say, I didn’t see a lot of things.”

LOCAL REPORTER

“You’ve seen the video?”

RAMON CERVANTES JR

“I have not.”

LOCAL REPORTER

“I believe the video shows one of the PUP supporters hitting on the UDP supporters with a stick.”

RAMON CERVANTES JR

“I haven’t seen it but as far as I know they are the ones that started. I would have to see it to make an assessment of it.”

LOCAL REPORTER

“Would you say that the political climate here in Orange Walk North is getting hostile?”

RAMON CERVANTES JR

“Yeah it is getting hostile however the government’s side has seen that our people will stand up and fight back.”

LOCAL REPORTER

“So it’s something that you condone?”

RAMON CERVANTES JR

“No, I don’t condone it.”

LOCAL REPORTER

“Would you advise them to maybe step back and not face any confrontation with the UDP supporters?”

RAMON CERVANTES JR

“I did that on Saturday because one of the guys called me and said that this is how it was getting. That was around 4:30pm and he asked me what I wanted him to do and I told him that they had made their point, they stood up and they have seen that they can’t just walk over them and retreat and that is really why it dissipated because we backed off.”

We understand that no police report was filed regarding the fight between political fanatics of both parties.
