Political Endorsement Sparks Questions in Belize City Mayoral Race: Mayor Wagner Responds
Municipal elections are one month away, and both political parties are ramping up their campaign efforts. On Friday, the PUP injected a recorded endorsement for Belize City Mayor, Bernard Wagner, from former UDP Minister of State, Santino Castillo. The endorsement came as a surprise with many asking how, what and why. Here is how Mayor Wagner responded to those questions.
Bernard Wagner, Mayor of Belize City: “As the ad says my relationship with Mr.Castillo goes way back beyond politics. I have tried as a mayor to serve all the people of the city. I have maintained that throughout my six years in office. I’ve tried to ensure that I’m here as a mayor for all the people irrespective of political affiliation. I have tried my best to be able to be accessible to UDP people, to PUP people and you will see throughout my campaign in this election that I will refrain from mudslinging. I don’t believe I’ve never been that type of person that believes in the mud slinging and the bringing down the other opponent. I believe that we deal with the issues at hand and you judge me by the performance of this council under the stresses of COVID, under the stresses of Lisa and at the end of the day you make your fair judgment as a resident of the city.”
Mayor Wagner was first elected in 2018, and is now seeking a third consecutive term./
