Port of Belize Eyes Partnership with Chetumal Free Zone in Mexican Collaboration

With the government now owning the Port of Belize, Prime Minister Briceno was able to agree to host Mexican officials to tour the facility with the goal of having Chetumal utilize the port as part of its free zone plans.

Hon. John Briceño, Prime Minister of Belize: “Also met with the governor from Quintana Roo was also there. We had several discussions. We had interest in the port because now that Chetumal is going to be a duty free area all the goods will have to come through the Belize Port and they want also take a look at the port and see that we can improve the port so that they could handle the amount of goods that they expect that will be coming through shortly. I extended an invitation to the governor and we expect that probably in the maybe month or two maybe she will be able to come on a working visit.”

It is to be noted that these are verbal agreements for now as official documents are expected to be signed in the coming weeks.
