Love News first broke the story that the National Environmental Appraisal Committee (NEAC) rejected the Port of Belize/Waterloo Expansion Project and since then, the committee has greenlighted the Port of Magical Belize Project. It is one of three port cruise projects happening near the coast of Belize City. Yesterday, we asked the Chief Environmental Officer, Anthony Mai for an update on how this facility is moving and how the DOE’s monitoring of it is going.
Anthony Mai, Chief Environmental Officer: “When environmental clearance is granted through the sining of an ECP there’s a requirement for the investor to begin work within a one year period and when I say work I don’t mean physical work on the ground but the developer has to show that again he’s moving towards physical operation with regards to the project and so in terms of the Port of Magica project the last update we got from it is that the investor was looking at obtaining approval from I think the Ministry of Works to install piles within the area etc and I know there is an REA that is being finalized for the road that that they proposed from the George Price Highway to the particular site. And so the developer is in the background working on these intangible type products, the reports, the architectural designs etc so they are moving forward but again they haven’t to my knowledge placed anything on the ground as yet.”
