Preparing for the Anti-Corruption Convention

In just three days Belize will become a party to the United Nations Convention against Corruption.  The official documents will be signed on Friday, December 9 and that piece of paper would mean that the Government would have to promote and strengthen measures in order to prevent and combat corruption in an effective and efficient manner.  Prime Minister of Belize, Dean Barrow had appointed a working group following pressures to sign onto the convention.  Heading that committee is Minister of State in the Ministry of Finance, Dr Carla Barnett.  Dr Barnett was a guest on yesterday’s Morning Show where she explained where the progress currently stands on getting prepared to sign.

Dr Barnett noted that laws and institutions are already in place for the most part which has helped the preparation process significantly.  Once the document is signed, however, there will be the need for further assessments.

Once the document is signed onto on Friday, the United Nations will be doing an annual review of Belize to ensure that the requirements are being met as explained by Marissa Longsworth of the Belize Chamber of Commerce Industry and Dr Barnett.

The signing on Friday will coincide with the International Day against Corruption.
