Another issue that President Spencer dealt with is the shortage of nurses in the country. In recent weeks an international organization out of the United Kingdom has been recruiting nurses from Belize to work abroad. Spencer says while he would not discourage anyone from uplifting themselves he will not promote the international recruitment.
Darrell Spencer, President, Nurses Association of Belize: “The association’s position is one to the membership and we have a great responsibility for nurses to serve the country of Belize. So the association does not take on any of these advertising for agencies. Of course from time to time a member, a nurse would ask for information and though we do not openly advertise for it a person has a right to seek a better life and if we as a country consistently do things to hinder the nurses progress in the country then all of us at some point in time would be more inclined to leave the public service, the nursing profession here in Belize. It is sad that we are living in a time where the government and more so the Ministry of Health is not really pushing for betterment of nurses although nurses continue to be short.”
