Primary School Children Attend Counseling Camp

Ten children from Grace Primary School in Belize City attended a counselling camp on how to understand and overcome grief. The initiative was facilitated through the Department of Youth Services. It was geared at creating a safe space for children who have lost a parent, especially to crime and violence. Love News attended the small closing ceremony and spoke with the Acting Coordinator for Belize Youth Counsel and Wellness under the Department of Youth Service, Pamela Dyer who explains that counselling should begin as early as possible as a preventative measure.

One of the Managers at the Department of Youth Services, Kirk Augustus says the counselling camp is a way to be proactive in keeping young people from turning to violence as a coping mechanism.

Augustus hopes that the counselling and wellness unit can target all aspects of grief and loss to ensure that young people are in a good emotional state.
