Prime Minister Briceno Commends Belize Coast Guard at Christmas Luncheon

Prime Minister John Briceno was the guest speaker today at a Christmas luncheon for the members of the Belize Coast Guard.  In his 8-minute address to the over 300 men and women present, the Prime Minister expressed gratitude and appreciation for the service provided in the area of maritime security.

Hon. John Briceño, Prime Minister of Belize: “When you look at the Barrier Reef that we have whilst it may be the second largest barrier reef it is the largest living barrier reef in the world. Of the four atolls we have in the Western Hemisphere Belize has three of them, I mean can you imagine that ? And you know what most Belizeans are not even aware of that. And so you all have the opportunity to see probably the most beautiful part of the country which is out in the sea but it goes to say that it’s not all beautiful because when it’s out there it’s raining and you get wet  and it gets cold and then you have to be sleeping out there in the water I mean it really requires a lot of sacrifice from your part. In many instances you are putting your life at risk to be able to keep Belize safe and also to help those that get lost out in the sea. Sometimes people get lost in the sea sometimes because of an accident but sometimes because of foolish decisions that they make and then it requires you to be able to risk your life to be out there trying to find a way how you can rescue them. All of this work that you do it is of paramount importance to our country. It is a job that has to be done every single day in many instances it’s a job that as I repeat nobody realizes what is it that you’re doing but it is very important what you do. The issue of drug trafficking within our waters I mean you all are here trying to help us to stave off that illicit industry passing the drugs because most of it goes up to the north and so along with our partners from the United States be it the military or the other officials in intelligence that can help us to be able to keep them off out of our waters, all of these things are very important.”

Not only did the Prime Minister address the gathering of men and women, but he also served food and drinks to many of the seamen and officers, which we will tell you about later in this newscast.
