The nation is gearing up for Garifuna Settlement Day this weekend with southern communities holding a number of events including the Yurumein – or the reenactment – to start the day tomorrow. Prime Minister John Briceño is spending the weekend in the Stann Creek and Toledo Districts. The Prime Minister will be meeting with community leaders, alcaldes, students and residents of the Toledo District before travelling to Dangriga, where he will participate in official ceremonies with our Garifuna community. Senior Correspondent Paul Mahung spoke to Prime Minister Briceño in Punta Gorda Today.

On Facebook, the Prime Minister wrote (quote) “The beauty and energy of our people of the South greeted me along with Hon Mike Espat, Hon. Oscar Requena and Mayor Charles Selgado. For the next two days, I will be touring Punta Gorda and Dangriga Towns” End quote. This year’s Garifuna Settlement Day is being celebrated under the theme “I for you, You for me is the Garifuna Way: Let us Continue to Move Forward.”
