Prime Minister Dean Barrow met with Verónica Zavala, the new General Manager of the Inter-American Development Bank’s (IDB) department for Central America, Mexico, Panama, Haiti and the Dominican Republic yesterday. Belize’s relationship with the bank and programming for 2018 was discussed. Zavala reaffirmed the strong partnership that exists between the IDB and Belize for the past 25 years. The Bank’s current portfolio in Belize includes five loans totaling seventy-two million US dollars, supporting sustainable tourism, education, transport, solid waste management and climate resilience, as well as over seventeen million US dollars in technical assistance and investment grants. Several new projects are currently in preparation. Belize became a borrowing member of the IDB in 1992. This is Zavala’s first official visit to Belize as regional manager for the IDB. Present at the meeting were IDB Country Representative, Cassandra Rogers, Financial Secretary, Joseph Waight, CEO of the Ministry of Economic Development, Yvonne Hyde and Belize’s Representative on the IDB Board of Executive Directors, Elvira Méndez.
