Senator Michael Peyrefitte says the government is not broke. He says that the situation is that the Briceno administration just cannot perform. His comments were made this morning to the media following the sitting of the Senate. Here is how that went.
Opposition Senator Michael Peyrefitte: “What do you mean that the government is broke ? That is absolutely nonsense and I have to take the words of Said Musa and don’t let them tell you that the government is bruk, the government is not bruk. The taxes are performing aren’t’ they ? So they inherited a healthy economy and indeed the past Prime Minister told that whoever took over would be facing a tough situation and decisions would have to be made. It seems as if though they are not ready for those decisions. It seems as though they are not up to the job that they begged the Belizean people for, a job that they claimed would be easy as 1-2-3. It is turning out that all those times they criticized Mr.Barrow and criticized the UDP, running a country and a government is not an easy job. We had people employed, we had people working, we didn’t have excess liquidity nor excess resources to do a lot of the things that we wanted to do but they came to the Senate and ratified a convention to give Michael Ashcroft and companies $400 million dollars. You’re telling me you do that and you don’t have money? You must have money. Not only that, you come in to government and you claim that when you were in opposition what had to have happened was that the government needed to grow the economy, you come in and your plan is to fire people, you plan is to cut wages ? Your plan according to you would have grown this economy ten fold, would have grown this economy by leaps and bounds, where is that plan ?”
Prime Minister John Briceno did not hesitate to respond to Peyrefitte’s comments. According to the PM, the statements are stupid and ridiculous.
Hon. John Briceno, Prime Minister of Belize: “I don’t usually like to call names for people but he’s a fool to say something like that. Everybody can tell you that we are suffering that we’re going through a difficult time. His former Prime Minister pointed out in a lengthy interview on one of his press conference saying he weeps for the government to come so how can the Chairman of the UDP say something so stupid and so ludicrous that we have a healthy economy ? Doesn’t he walk the – well I don’t think he can walk the streets but he, if he would only look around and see how people are living he would understand that there’s a financial crisis, there’s an economic crisis, that people are suffering even the representative of Albert in the House on Friday said that she was visiting the people in her constituency and saying that things are really really bad. So what planet is this man living in? What, he wants so much attention that he’ll say things like that because he’s really making a fool of himself and I really don’t like talking about people like that but how dare him say something like that ? How dare him ?”
