As at one o’clock this afternoon, the Ministry of Health has detected 28 new Covid-19 cases over a 24-hour period. Forty six cases have been dubbed as recovered, and one death has been reported. It has been just under two months since new regulations were introduced by the Briceno administration to bring down the infection rates. The regulations and the enforcement appear to be working as the figures are seeing a decline. The decline in these rates, however, is now seeing some corners of society clamoring for some ease in the Covid-19 regulations. Those in the north are asking for inter-district travel restrictions to be lifted while others around the country are asking for an ease on the curfew hours. Prime Minister Briceno spoke on this yesterday following Cabinet’s meeting.
Hon. John Briceno, Prime Minister of Belize: “The infection rate was over five thousand and right now it is under five hundred and we must give credit to the Minister and his technical team. As we said we’re going to follow the science and that’s exactly what we have been doing, we’ve been following the science and doing everything to control the spread of COVID. Now more than ever we have to be able now to walk that thin line between controlling COVID but at the same time addressing the issues of the economy where people need to work and that is why tomorrow the Minister will be announcing the loosening of some of the restrictions, not removing all the restrictions but loosening some of the restrictions so that people can work and move a bit more freely than right now.”
Reporter: Would you be able to say the ban on interdistrict travel in Orange Walk and Corozal lifted ?
Hon. John Briceno, Prime Minister of Belize: “That will be lifted.”
Reporter: But it will come into effect still February first right ?
Hon. John Briceno, Prime Minister of Belize: “February first.”
While PM Briceno told the media that we can expect an announcement from the Minister of Health today on the proposed changes, our newsroom was told that those changes will be announced either on Friday or Monday. We will keep you posted..
