Program Offers Support and Rehabilitation for Homeless Individuals

There is a come along program that focuses on reaching out to homeless persons whilst seeking to bring them some reprieve, and rehabilitation.  Richard Smith is the director and owner of Christian Ministries in Belmopan who told Love News that his passion is to reach out to the homeless who suffer from addictions.   We came across this program after our newsroom was looking into the death of 52-year-old, Gerald McKoy, a homeless man found underneath the former Scotiabank building in San Ignacio.  According to Smith, the program is for three months, and includes shelter and food.

Richard Smith, Director and Owner, My Christian Ministries: “It grieves my heart to say the gentleman, the body that was found at the street side in San Ignacio Town because it is this same thing. We see them, we call them “sprang head”, “crack head”, we call them all kind of head but they just need somebody to believe in them to give them better perspective to help them to see that we can restore. This is something I think the government needs to look at very seriously and my thing is the church and government must work together because the government can’t do it by themselves, the church can’t do it by themselves. The government creates the problem and we are the re builders because we are not ready for ten grams or legalizing of marijuana. We are not ready for this free flow of alcohol. Every party the government office is doing something, doing parade, alcohol have to be there and this alcohol is really taking us by storm. We make the legislation of new laws for everything except this drinking, this reckless drinking. We foster it and it’s taking our people by storm and left behind. So we would like to see some changes in this area. According to the police statistics it says the number one contribution to crime is alcohol consumption but yet we don’t do anything about it and so where do we stop ? We have politicians legislating new laws but nothing has legislated to say if we find you drinking and driving we’re gonna put stiff penalties that are going to send a message. We don’t say if we find you drunk, like Chetumal, Chetumal you laying down on the street anywhere as a drunken person they pick you up arrest you until you get sober. We must come together. Both of us are called to serve the people. Government and church need to sit down together and look how we can foster this. The problem the government tends to say ‘Oh we don’t have money.’ but little is much when God is in it. If we could sit down, formulate a plan, an action plan I think the government needs to care more about those on the street side not pull them out when you want their voting counts but lets look at what we can do. There has been a trend in this country where we try to move church separate church and government that’s what’s killing us right now. 95% of our schools are church based we had a great working relationship but this generation wants to take us down the other path so there has to be a merging back so the task of serving the people. A lot of churches would be willing to open their backyard. Could you imagine if we take one by one we don’t have to have a big institution we just have to have a caring corner.”

My Refuge Radio Station is one of four Christian organizations that assists homeless persons, others include: Hedges, Freedom House, Remar and Jacob’s Farm.
