The Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture signed a contract for the lighting of the Marion Jones Sporting Complex. Four light posts will be installed at the sporting complex. In addition to this project, the Ministry also unveiled the design of the indoor basketball and volleyball facility that will be constructed. Project Coordinator for United Nations Office on Projects, UNOPS, Robert Woisky, spoke about the details of the projects.
The process to secure the funds was carried out by the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture but supervision of the construction and completion of the project is being carried out by UNOPS. The process of having an outside agency supervise projects is unusual in Belize. Minister of State in the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture Elodio Aragon said it is all in the interest of accountability.
Millions of dollars have been invested in the Marion Jones complex since its construction was started. Minister Aragon, stated that the Complex is still not up to where he would like to see it; but he is working towards improving it during his term in office.
Five million US dollars that will be invested in the projects was donated by the government of Mexico. The total costs of the projects combined totaled three point nine million dollars. The bidding process is expected to be completed by the end of this year. The installation of the light posts is expected to be completed by the beginning of next year while the volleyball and basketball facilities are expected to be completed by February of 2018.
