Protests Erupt Over Sand Extraction Activities in North Stann Creek River

Activities seeing the extraction of sand are being protested in the south at the North Stann Creek River. The extraction exercise has been happening over a three-day period by the Dangriga Town Council.  According to the President of the Southern Workers Union, Mason Lewis, if the extraction is necessary it would be better utilized in developing the area into a tourist destination.

The protest involved two men who held up placards yesterday morning in the area of extraction.  Lewis, says, however, that the two men represent over 100 men of the Southern Workers Union.  Dangriga Mayor, Robert Mariano commented on the issue that the exercise was done to give way to fisher folks since the sand from the sea accumulates at the center between the river and the sea.
