The PSU has also come out to speak on recent firings happening within the public service since the Briceno administration came to office on November 12.  Vice President Flowers explained how the union is hoping these matters could be settled in the future and that they plan to investigate the terminations.

Dean Flowers, First Vice President, Public Service Union: “In terms of the firings that may have occurred this week I wouldn’t be able to speak on them because to be honest I understand that there is some information out there that speaks to a couple of individuals who were let go from their job; I haven’t seen the dismissal letters so I’m not able to comment on those, I have seen the one where Dr.Babb is concerned. I want to make clear that where terminations occur which were unjustified, unfair and politically motivated we will condemn those but we are also cognizant that prior to the elections a number of public officers broke the public service regulations by actively participating in political campaigns and actively being out there carrying out the mandate of the now opposition and so those would be justified terminations and there is little we can do where those are concerned because the public service regulations is clear public officers ought not to engage in political campaigns and political speech. But like I said I don’t have the termination letters, I have not been made aware of those termination other than that of Dr.Babb who I also understand has already reached the retirement age. As you know the Public Service Union’s position is we believe in giving young people the opportunity to lead. We are a proponent, we propose upward mobility for officers within the public service and so where Dr.Babb’s termination is concerned perhaps that is something that the Ministry of Education saw that rather than have a retired officer in the position we’re hoping of course now that once a replacement is named that that replacement would be somebody under the age of 55 who can contribute a number of years in the post but who also would be qualified.”
