The Belize Public Service Union is in negotiation with Simplex Design Company Limited, the legal owners of the Hilltop property in Belmopan to grant them time to evacuate the building. The Hilltop land has housed the union’s headquarters for many years but the Belmopan City Council sold the property to Simplex after the union failed to keep up with their lease. The Union then filed a case against the Belmopan City Council and the President of the PSU, Gerald Henry feels that they are in a good position fighting their case against the Belmopan City Council.
Gerald Henry, President, Public Service Union:“In regards to the eviction we have no such actual notice of eviction per se from Simplex based on what the lawyer had said, we actually have not had any eviction notice from them. We are also in negotiations with them in fact for them to perhaps look at affording us some time to evacuate the building when that time comes. Eventually sometime down the road we perceive that to happen because like I said the court seems to be taking the side that Simplex is the actual legal owners so that’s the direction we are heading. With regard to the other side of it in terms of the relationship that we have with the Belmopan City Council and our case against them because remember we had a case against the Belmopan City council as well, that is ongoing and we are looking I think we are looking positive in that regard with the Belmopan City Council.”
Reporter: Because you had said that there had been additional information that had been found that would help your case ?
Gerald Henry, President, Public Service Union:“Right. Well that has been set aside because we are in negotiations again with the Belmopan City Council. I can’t speak to the details of that but like I said I think PSU is in a good position right now and that’s as far as I can take it because we are in negotiations and I don’t want to prejudice anything with regards to the Belmopan City council and when that process has been completed then certainly you all will be updated with regards to the results of that.”
Reporter: Those negotiations are in relation to finding another location where the PSU can move to ?
Gerald Henry, President, Public Service Union:“Yes it involves all of that, it’s all encompassing and so hence the reason I need to ensure I don’t speak too much about it and allow the process to take place.”
Though Henry is confident in their case submission and mentioned that the property was gifted to them under the Simeon Lopez administration Belmopan Mayor Khalid Belisle refuted those statements and so has Lopez.
