Prime Minister John Briceno says he makes no apology for giving the Governor-General a raise in her salary and a better financial compensation package. Governor-General Froyla Tzalam’s salary has gone from $52,848 annually plus $2,400 in allowances to $75,000 annually and $12,000 in allowances. The Public Service Union (PSU) has written to the head of state asking her to defer her salary increase for three years. PSU President Dean Flowers says that the Governor-General has yet to respond to the letter from the union.
Dean Flowers, President, Public Service Union: “The Governor General has not responded to the letter that the union set her. As I stated in a previous interview we believe that it was the right thing to do as the head of state we believe we want this Governor General to show that in fact she is truly Belizean and that she truly appreciates and stands with the worker of this country who turns the wheels of government. And so again as I also have stated it is her choice as to whether or not she defers her salary for three years or the salary increase that was provided to her and we leave that to her and history will be the judge of the kind of leader she was if it is that she decides to stand with or stand against public officers.”
Hipolito Novelo, Love News: Do you believe or do you expect that the GG will answer your letter ?
Dean Flowers, President, Public Service Union: “I am hoping that the GG will show courtesy. That she will act as Her Excellency and that she will respectfully respond to our letter. As I said we cannot force her, we respect her and we believe that she will equally respect the representative of the workers of this country so we look forward to her response.”
