PSU Threatens Action Over Government’s Phone Allowance Increase Amid Prosecutor Agreement Delay
The unfulfilled agreement made with the court prosecutors comes at a time when the Ministry of Finance had confirmed the increase in phone allowance for the Solicitor General, the Cabinet Secretary, and the CEOs in all ministries. It is a 140 percent increase that will see phone allowance go up from two hundred and fifty dollars monthly to six hundred dollars. PSU President has called it blasphemous, and has mounted a threat to take industrial action if the government does not rescind its decision to increase telephone allowances.
The internal memo from the Financial Secretary was leaked last Thursday. Since then several unions including the Belize National Teachers’ Union and the National Trade Union Congress of Belize have registered their disapproval at the government’s decision, all demanding that the decision be reversed.
