Public Outcry Frees Mentally Ill Nurse Jailed Over Unpaid Meal

A retired nurse suffering from mental health issues, Idi McDougall, is free today after public outcry led to the withdrawal of charges against her for allegedly “obtaining services by deception.” The 46-year-old was remanded to Belize Central Prison yesterday after being unable to pay a $500 bail following her arrest for an unpaid food bill at Spoonaz Restaurant.  McDougall was arrested Saturday after her debit card repeatedly declined when she tried to pay for a meal. She pleaded not guilty, stating it was a misunderstanding and that she “never intentionally did it,” having experienced similar card issues earlier that day.  Videos of McDougall being escorted to prison circulated widely online, sparking widespread outrage among Belizeans who criticized the justice system’s “harsh and humiliating” response, especially given her clean record and profession. The incident ignited conversations about poverty and discretion in minor legal offenses.  Love News spoke with humanitarian Albert Magdaleno who explained that persons were reaching out to him to assist McDougall.

Albert Magdaleno, Humanitarian: “This morning when I got up I found a message on my phone saying that “Sir I saw the news last night, I was very disturbed by what happened and I want to pay for the lady to come out of prison and to pay for the food, can you go and find out what’s happening and then let me know so I can send the cash ?” Well I made a post to start my day and say you know anonymous donor offered to pay for the food and pay for the bail for her to come out not knowing that that would have went like wildfire. So when it went like wildfire people had a lot of negative things to say about Spoonaz. So Spoonaz called, I went in to them, I had a meeting and then she said you know what let’s drop this I personally walked with her to the police station and watched her drop all charges and everything was dropped. The documents were then prepared, sent over to the court and then the police went, the van to get her from prison and then they brought her out in front of the judge and let her know that the complainant has dropped all charges. In all things we must have compassion because yes it’s their business and they have a business to operate, it’s a new management but compassion is all I could say.”

Following the public backlash, Spoonaz Reggae Café issued a public apology, expressing regret and acknowledging they were unaware of McDougall’s mental health condition. They stated, “Our intention was never to criminalize hardship… this is clearly an incident that could have happened at any business… but called for a greater degree of sensitivity and understanding than we exercised in the moment.” The restaurant also noted this wasn’t the first time individuals had left without paying, highlighting challenges faced by small businesses.  Several individuals had attempted to pay McDougall’s bill at the restaurant, but were informed it had already been voided.  Today we were able to speak with attorney Norman Rodriguez who condemned the business for wanting to take action for a small sum of money.

Norman Rodriguez, Attorney: “When I spoke to her afterwards she notified me that she had gone down to eat at the Cafe, Spoonaz Cafe, and when she attempted to pay there was no money on her card. She said she was surprised and somebody would have taken off her money. I asked her whom I needed to call but I was unable to reach the person. I went back into court but I also afterwards made a call to Mr.Spoonaz himself and he advised me that he was not managing the cafe anymore. So in all fairness to him people should not be lashing out at Spoonaz the individual. If they want to go after the cafe then yes they can but he was surprised because his response was for $48 ? And this is what the lady told me, it was $48 and some change and I guess he acted on that and attempted to get her assistance but I just couldn’t stand there in court and hear somebody…she was going to be taken to prison for $48 ? So I tried to find out what it is that they wanted if they wanted her to go to jail or if they would have been satisfied with just collecting the money. Unfortunately I didn’t get to speak to the manager not by her fault I chose not to because I don’t know the lady. I attempted to call her this morning and it had already been settled so I am thankful that Mr.Spoonaz may have intervened. He uttered it surprisingly “for $48 ?” And this is how it is.”

Off the record we were able to speak to several persons who were going to the business establishment to pay the bill for McDougall, but all were made to understand that it had already been voided.
