Within minutes of the big reveal of the new currency designs, hundreds of Belizeans began opining on whether the design is better than the current. Other concerns raised were not so much over the design, but rather the value of the Belize dollar. Despite several assurances that a change of the design would not impact the value of the currency, many remain adamant that it will. Love News took to the streets this morning to get the views of the man and woman at the local market and bus terminal.
Interestingly, just last year, England changed the design of its currency to replace the Queen of England with King Charles the Third. Other countries to have changed the design of its currency without any financial ramifications include Australia who removed the Queen from its five dollar bill, and replaced it with the nation’s indigenous heritage and culture. Two years ago, Barbados, replaced the queen on its banknotes, and elected a Barbadian as the head of state. In The Bahamas, the central bank released a new hundred dollar bill a year before the queen’s death, replacing her image with one of the country’s founding fathers who fought for the country’s independence. As it relates to the devaluation of currencies, late last year, Forbes Magazine, issued a list of the weakest dollar in the world. Belize was not on the list which included countries like Iran, Vietnam, Sierra Leone, Laos, Indonesia, Uzbekistan, Paraguay, Cambodia and Uganda.
