PUC seeks public input on how telecommunications prices should be regulated

The PUC is holding consultations to determine how telecommunications prices should be regulated in Belize. The commission is inviting consumers, service providers and other interested persons to give their views on a permanent pricing framework. Temporary tariff-freezing regulations were introduced earlier this year, following the PUC’s determination on market dominance. The commission says those measures are intended to keep prices stable while permanent rules are developed.  The consultation will look at how providers submit and disclose their rates, how prices should be assessed where companies have market power, and how compliance should be monitored and enforced.  The PUC says the framework should suit Belize’s telecommunications sector, allowing competition to guide prices where appropriate and providing regulatory oversight where needed.  The consultation paper is available on the PUC’s website. Written comments can be emailed to info@puc.bz by four p.m. on Tuesday, December 15.
