Punta Gorda Honors Bernadina Elijio’s Legacy and Cultural Contributions

The event honored the life and legacy of well-known Punta Gorda resident, Bernadina Augustina Flores Elijio, a respected Garifuna cultural advocate and singer who has remained actively involved in the preservation and promotion of Garifuna traditions. As part of the reenactment, a cultural parade moved through the streets of Punta Gorda, with Bernadina herself participating in the procession. The parade made its way to St. Peter Claver Church, where a special mass was held in her honor. The celebration also highlighted her contributions to Garifuna culture, recognizing her ongoing work in keeping traditions, music, and identity alive within the community. Earlier in the day, she was also seen at the Punta Gorda pier, where she welcomed fellow Garifuna participants arriving by boat, marking a symbolic moment of unity and cultural pride.
