PUP celebrates 70th anniversary

Over the weekend the People’s United Party (PUP) celebrated its 70th year anniversary after being founded in 1950. The PUP is one of the two major parties in Belizean politics and was founded out of the Nationalist Movement, as an anti-colonial party while the country was ruled by the United Kingdom as British Honduras.

Yesterday the party held a virtual National Party Council Meeting and saw many presentations from standard bearers and other PUP loyalists. Three persons were also sworn in as standard Bearers that is Henry Charles Usher for Fort George, Cordel Hyde for Lake Independence and John Briceno for Orange Walk Central. The Chairman of the party, Henry Charles Usher, gave his chairman’s address, here is a snippet of his speech.

Henry Charles Usher, PUP Chairman: “Seventy years ago the torch of the peaceful, construction Belizean revolution was lit- the birth of the People’s United Party on September 29th 1950 and today seven decades later the blue flame is burning brightly. It burns for freedom, it burns for democracy, it burns for the social progress of the Belizean people. It burns for the social progress of the Belizean people. It burns in each and every one of us and it has given us the motivation and strength to continue on, to fight on, to stand up against injustice and oppression, to serve each other and the people of this great nation. One of my most cherished tasks as Chairman during this celebration is to honor those men and women-soldiers of the revolution- who have dedicated their lives to Belize and to their party. They are men and women of great character, iron will, resolute integrity, indomitable spirit. Each year we award persons from the  community in which we live with the George Price Service to the People Award. This year unfortunately we could not do so in person but as seeing from the photo clips the standard bearers carried out the task of delivering the awards – congrats to all. It has been a long red nightmare in Belize. A red nightmare of corruption, theft, victimization. A scourge that has stifled the development, killed dreams and eradicated hope but this nightmare is almost over and the dawn of a new day is coming. A fresh start for our country and an opportunity for Belizeans to return to the path of prosperity. Yes elections are right around the corner and the people are ready. You are ready. Ready for a government where everybody wins. Todos ganamos. Ready for a team that works on behalf of the people. Ready for a compassionate, hard working leader John Briceno to be Prime Minister. Ready for a government of the People’s United Party.”

The Party’s Leader, John Briceno spoke about the party’s legacy and their readiness for this year’s general elections.

Hon. John Briceno, Leader of the Opposition, People’s United Party: Today we celebrate by giving thanks for all those true blue supporters who helped us to reach this incredible milestone. We are the oldest and most accomplished political institution in our nation. We will forever be unmatched in Belize because we are the party of self government, of adult suffrage and we are the party of independence. We built a country and the institutions that has withstood the shocks and jolts of thirty nine years of independence. Over the past twelve years those institutions have been tested yet we’re still here today, still independent, still democratic and still full of hope. This is our legacy and it should inspire all Belizeans for this is not just a PUP legacy but the legacy of everyone who believes in freedom and democracy, in progress and prosperity for all. My friends something special is happening in Belize. Our people are facing the challenge of time and are rising up to the occasion and that is motivation for all of us who are running for the PUP so yes we are ready for this fight. We are ready to meet the challenge of our generation. Ready to make government fairer, more accountable and capable and with the guidance of our creator we will make good on our promise of building a Belize that works for everyone and a place where every body fu win. Todos ganamos. Long live the PUP. Que viva PUP. God Belize you and God bless Belize.”

The virtual event had presentation from the United Women’s Group, live entertainment from local artists including Mr. Program and the return of the Caliente Girls.
