PUP Chairman Condemns Opposition Leader’s Stance on Taiwan Resolution

Ambassador Jorge Rosado is one of several diplomats in the country this week for Belize’s 43rd anniversary of independence and what is known as Diplomatic Week.  Earlier today several new ambassadors presented their credentials to the Governor General, including the Ambassadors of Türkiye, Canada, Egypt, and Germany. As Belize welcomes diplomatic friends and dignitaries, the Chairman of the People’s United Party (PUP) took to the party’s talk show to condemn the actions of the Leader of the Opposition.  The condemnation was over the position the opposition leader took at Friday’s House Meeting as it relates to a resolution on Taiwan’s 35-year friendship.

Henry Usher, PUP Chairman: “What I would only describe as an international shame that after 35 years of friendship with Taiwan. 35 years in which Taiwan has been an excellent partner and friend to Belize that the Leader of the Opposition would actually abstain in a motion thanking and supporting the people and government of Taiwan. That he does not have the wherewithal, the courage to stand up for what is right. Why ? Because he wants to distance himself from the other members on his side of the house. It was a despicable display, it was a sheepish vote of abstaining. I don’t know how you say abstain in Mandarin but I’m sure that’s how they announced it back in Taiwan that the Leader of the Opposition in Belize abstained on a vote supporting the country, the people of Taiwan and I don’t think you guys have made enough of that on this station to just explain what that means. That after the help that Taiwan has given Belize including when his father was Prime Minister of Belize Taiwan was always there for budgetary support, tourism, culture, agriculture there were so many areas that Taiwan helped the UDP government and for him to stand up in the House and vote a vote of abstaining man that was a shame, it was a disgrace and for that reason alone he should step down. I’ll be honest with you, he should step down for doing something like that.”
