PUP Chairman denies division at City Hall over Albert Vaughn’s Appointment as City Administrator

PUP Chairman denies division at City Hall over Albert Vaughn’s Appointment as City Administrator

The Chairman of the People’s United Party has denied that there is a current a divide at City Hall over Albert Vaughn’s appointment as City Administrator. On Monday, Deputy Mayor Allan Pollard and five other councilors sent a letter to Mayor Bernard Wagner rejecting Vaughn’s appointment and calling for a caucus meeting. The group has reportedly begun looking into legal options despite Vaughn already taking office. The issue has reportedly created a divide among the councilors, but, according to Minister Henry Charles Usher, that’s not the case. Today, Usher blamed the media for the reports and claimed that while there seem to be differences of opinion, the council is united.

Henry Charles Usher, PUP Chairman: “Well I think that divide is something that the media has created because there is no division. In terms of the selection of the City Administrator there was an interview committee that was established. The three individuals who applied for the post were interviewed, a decision was made by the interview panel and then it will go to the council so that they can make the final decision so really the process is one that is established in the act and it’s something that is ongoing. In terms of differences of opinion that happens all of the time, persons may say oh we prefer this or we prefer that person but there is no real division when it comes to the selection and the fact that the process was followed. The media creates divides all the time. It sells ad space I believe.”

One of the ministers who reportedly supported Vaughn’s Appointment was Freetown Area Representative Francis Fonseca. This morning, Fonseca was asked to weigh in on the predicament and the back and forth it has sparked at City Hall.

Francis Fonseca, Area Representative, Freetown Division: “Yeah well I’m not a part of any divide. I’m all about working together and getting work done for the people of Belize City. You know, anybody who knows Albert Vaughn knows that he is a man who makes his own decisions. I did not encourage him to apply for the post of City Administrator but when he told me that he was I respected that decision and I support him fully. He’s a good man, he’s a hard worker so you know I certainly wish him well and he has my support but you know I hope that the issue can be resolved between the mayor and the councilors in a peaceful way and that we all understand that we have work to do for the residents of Belize City. People are not interested in the bickering. We just got elected in March, the new City Council team. Our people in Freetown including Albert Vaughn worked very hard to get every single one of them elected and now it’s time to work it’s not time for posturing and profiling and you know bickering. The residents of Belize City deserve a council that is working for them. You know we can’t always work with people who you love and agree with a hundred percent of the time, that’s the nature of life. The important thing is that we work with people who share our objectives and share our vision so I would hope that they would understand that and set aside whatever personal agendas or individual agendas.”

Vaughn was one of three applicants for City Administrator.  The other applicants were Linsford Castillo of the PUP Secretariat and one Stacy Swift.
