The People’s United Party has issued a release speaking against care packages that have been provided by certain area representatives to their constituents. According to them, Belizeans have, quote, “…reacted with disbelief and outrage at the action of certain UDP politicians who are using the tragedy, panic and desperation caused by COVID-19 to attempt to garner political mileage.” End quote. The PUP is specifically referring to the bags carrying various household items, including toilet paper, cleaning products, and food products, that are branded with political messages. The release stated quote, “This is no time for pettiness, no time for propagandizing, no time to sneak in a last bid for political gain, in the form of a few cans of beans packed in bright red bags emblazoned ‘Faber for Leader’, or ‘OJ for Freetown’, ‘Tracy Care Packs’ – and there are others.” End quote. The release goes on to say that after twelve years of the UDP, many Belizeans are so impoverished that they must rely on the handouts for their survival.
