CANDICE TO JB

PUP Councillor holds her Party Leader Accountable

PUP’s City Councilor Candice Pitts has written to Party Leader, John Briceno holding him accountable for a commitment made for inclusion of women in Parliament.   Councillor Pitts reminded Briceno of remarks he made in 2007 that spoke of political reform that would include a thirty percent representation of women in Parliament.  Fast forward thirteen years later and Briceno who has been serving as the PUP’s Party Leader from 2008 to 2011 and from 2016 to present, still has not fulfilled this commitment.

In Pitts’ letter to Briceno she wrote, quote, “to date, there seems to be more lip service done by the PUP rather than serious efforts to realize and actualize this mandate.” End quote. Pitts noted that various opportunities have arisen that the PUP could have taken in order to increase women’s representation. The most recent opportunity being for the Queen Square division. According to Pitts, this is a perpetuation of the deliberate and disgraceful underrepresentation of women in the party’s political affairs. Since the party only has two women, Pitts is hoping that they would have treated the candidacy of these two women as a priority. She stated that while her team has been working diligently in the Mesopotamia division they have been devoid of any real resources from the Party. With Mesopotamia being a strong hold for the United Democratic Party, Pitts has called on Briceno to look closely at this division and give the support it needs to declare a victory for the PUP.  In addition, Pitts spoke on consultations within the PUP saying that she hopes that the Party will start to include all 30 standard bearers in the decisions made for the party.  While the Party Leader would not comment on the letter he received, Love News spoke with a senior party member who explained that Pitts’ letter is misguided and that the party is unsure of what may have triggered the letter.  She noted that the party has made many efforts to include women including Valerie Woods, Erica Jong and Thea Garcia.  In the end however, the voters are the ones who decide via a convention who will be their standard bearers.  She added that they have approached several women as well including Dr Lesbia Guerra who have declined for personal reasons.  Love News understands that there are currently six women on the party’s National Executive.
