CAMPAIGN MONEY

PUP leader lobbies for campaign funding

One of the highlights of last week’s conference hosted by the Prime Minister was the fact that receiving campaign funding for politicians or political parties is not illegal in Belize.  It is an eye-opening statement and a loophole that politicians could use to get away with shady business.

One of the highlights of last week’s conference hosted by the Prime Minister was the fact that receiving campaign funding for politicians or political parties is not illegal in Belize.  It is an eye-opening statement and a loophole that politicians could use to get away with shady business.  It is a point taken by the opposition, PUP, and the Opposition Leader has committed to addressing should he be voted in government later this year.

Hon. John Briceno, Opposition Leader: “There was no campaign going on at that time, they were giving him $25,000 a month, there was no campaign, that happened what 2012, 2013, the election was 2012 that was afterwards and then how about all the flights? I mean even the news editor from Channel 7 Jules Vasquez mentioned he knows about how this man was flying John Saldivar and his group, his friends all over the place in a private plane and you need to ask yourself why is this man doing this for John Saldivar; because he looks pretty? Because he looks good? Because he’s smart? It was simply because he was a minister in the UDP government.”

The topic of campaign financing came up last week when Prime Minister alluded that monies received from businesspersons could be campaign money and nothing else.  He was making reference to the Lev Dermen scandal that was the focus of the conference.
