The People’s United Party has lined up 30 of the 31 standard bearers for next year’s general elections. While the Collet Division standard bearer is yet to be identified, this weekend saw Thea Garcia-Ramirez sworn in following a victory at the convention for Corozal Bay. With the general elections slated for next year, the People’s United Party is looking to seal its standard bearers for the 31 divisions across the country. Sunday, July 14 saw the conventions for both the Corozal Bay and the Corozal North divisions, leaving only the Collet division without a PUP Standard Bearer. In yesterday’s convention, the PUP supporters came out in the thousands with Corozal Bay seeing 47 percent of its total registered voters. Thea Garcia-Ramirez took on the task of challenging Elvia Vega-Samos who was elected in 2020 in a bi-election following the death of her predecessor, her brother, David Dido Vega. For Garcia-Ramirez, her campaign began years ago as she has had aspirations to serve in Corozal. Her official campaign, however, took off in May leading up to the convention and since then she told Love News she has been able to network and gain support for her candidacy.
Thea Garcia Ramirez, PUP Corozal Bay Standard Bearer: “Also have the mayor of PG and I have the mayor of Belmopan and so I have a great big support and that just goes to show that a politician doesn’t only win on Election Day but also has great networking and I have a great support group. I have a lot of people that are rooting for me within the constituency and outside because they know the type of work that I do, they see what I have delivered, they know that we are going to continue to deliver for Corozal Bay and let me tell you when the tide rises it floats all the boats, the sun shines for everyone. And so when you have somebody that’s working it looks good not only in the constituency but for us as a party and it’s good for us as a country. We had an enormous convention of over 3,000 people so that cannot be played down. So PUP is alive and well in Corozal and what we have to do now is make sure that both camps come together to keep Corozal Bay PUP Blue all the way.”
Love News met up with Elvia Vega-Samos during the convention yesterday. At midday she was confident of a win, saying that her team had surpassed the goal in voters’ turnout.
Elvia Vega Samos, Former PUP Corozal Bay Standard Bearer: “We are satisfied and God willing we will be victorious. When it comes to the challenges from the very beginning there have been huge challenges. I must thank the people of Corozal Bay. I know you had asked for an interview before but I was campaigning and being out there in the people’s homes they inviting me in their humble abodes you know making me feel as part of their family today you know I’m out here they’re in the line and talking to them, they’re hugging me, they’re telling me don’t worry Elvie this victory is ours and that I’m really humbled by that.”
