PUP Postpones Decision on Toledo East Seat

PUP Postpones Decision on Toledo East Seat

Today, the People’s United Party was to make a decision on how they will fill the vacant seat in Toledo East.  The party had pledged to not discuss the matter until after a decision was made by its Secretariat on May 3. However, it seems that the PUP has not been able to decide on whether it will endorse a possible candidate or hold a convention. Espat’s son, Melhem, has expressed interest in the seat, but so too has CEO Dr. Osmond Martinez, who serves under the Prime Minister. Martinez had spoken about his intentions before Espat’s passing, which had ruffled many feathers, including that of the late politician. Espat’s family has since spoken on the intentions of the young Espat and stated that the PUP should not take “legacy” lightly. Today, our newsroom asked the Area Representative of Caribbean Shores, Kareem Musa, about the matter and whether he believes the party should endorse a candidate.

Kareem Musa, Minister of Home Affairs: “I think both candidates bring a huge value to the table in terms of their candidacy and it’s pretty much going to secure the People’s United Party another victory at the polls in Toledo East. I think the family at this time and all the mourners are just grieving the passing of our beloved Iron Mike as I like to call him and so I haven’t put much thought to it but I’m certain that the best candidate will be chosen at the end of the day to represent Toledo East.”

Reporter: What were your thoughts when you heard Mr.Luke Espat mention legacy and he sort of referred to your brother sort of taking over from your father in Fort George ?

Kareem Musa, Minister of Home Affairs: “I think in terms of legacies in the country there are certain families that have by their very nature gotten into politics and so it’s not just in Fort George like I think he mentioned other divisions as well and so it’s very obvious that you have certain families who are inclined to offer themselves in political office.”

Meanwhile, Leader of the Opposition Moses Shyne Barrow says that Dennis Williams will be the next area rep for Toledo East. Barrow says that he has faith in Williams’s ability to deliver, as the division is a division that has been represented by both PUP and UDP area reps in the past.

Moses “Shyne” Barrow, Leader of the Opposition: “Brother Disco. Brother Disho is really an exemplary textbook story of a politician that has really given their life to service. Disho is a student protege of Eden Martinez School who was successful against Iron Mike in 2008 and he was very instrumental in bringing Eden in and so I am very confident in his ability to deliver Toledo East for the United Democratic Party. He has paid his dues, he has been there since the victory of Eden Martinez who took out Iron Mike and I am confident that whoever the People’s United Party candidate is and I know they have their own division and their own civil war happening right now in Toledo East, I am confident that he will be able to deliver Toledo East for the United Democratic Party. It is a seat that Charles Wagner won three consecutive times from back in the early 70’s to the mid 80’s. That seat did not go blue until ’89 and then Eden Martinez took it back red in, Eden Martinez and Joseph Cayetano took it back red it was a flip flop so it’s not a garrison the likes of a Fort George or some of the other Orange Walk Central. It’s certainly a constituency that has enjoyed great leadership under the United Democratic Party.”

Espat’s funeral is slated for next Saturday in the Toledo District.
