PUP Remains Unfazed by John Saldivar’s Win

Prime Minister, John Briceño, weighed in on the recent UDP Convention that was held in Belmopan. The media asked him for his comments on the former Minister of National Security, John Saldivar, coming out victorious in this three-way race to be the UDP Standard Bearer for Belmopan, and will be the one going up against current Area Representative and Minister of State Oscar Mira. PM Briceño says they are unperturbed by this and are instead focusing on the PUP’s work to improve the community.

Hon. John Briceño, Prime Minister of Belize: “I don’t want to sound boastful but it does not matter to us who they put to run in that division Oscar Mira as the area representative has been doing tremendous work in the division he has been doing a lot of work in fixing roads, in building roads, putting culverts, working on parks, we’re even setting up now a new police substation in Belmopan thanks to his efforts so he has been on the ground and he’s been working so it doesn’t matter to us who they would want to put as their candidate but John Saldivar is a reflection of the UDP. He reflects what the UDP truly stands for and while the Leader of the Opposition was trying to make these bold statements he knew what was going to be the results, he knew that you have probably about twenty different former ministers representatives that are joined at the hip with John Saldivar. They represent the worst of the UDP and that’s fine by us we don’t really look at what they’re doing we look at what we’re doing for us what is important that we continue to do the work. We have reduced unemployment to 5% and I challenge anyone that does not believe the numbers to go at SIB to look at how it was done, look at the legislation that we just passed with the MSMEs I mean that’s something that’s not done anywhere. When we presented that to the IMF the IMF is excited of what we’re doing to try to get the small businessman and woman involved so that they can get tax exemptions or duty exemptions they could be able to access government business 20% of government business which represents about $45 million dollars that we are setting aside for them. When you look at how we’ve grown the economy from we come in here it was contracting under the UDP in 2019 to be able to grow the economy by 12.5% the year before and this ending year 2022 is going to be anywhere between 8 and 12%. Judge us by what we’re doing and not just because of what you would want and that is my challenge to anyone.”
