The Opposition Party (PUP) was to address the media this afternoon in a formal press conference but that was moved to tomorrow. They did, however, ask the media to meet with them briefly following a meeting at Independence Hall. According to the PUP Chairman Henry Charles Usher, their meeting was mostly to discuss party policies. We’ll get to that later. What Love News did ask Usher about was the names of Ralph Fonseca and Said Musa that also came up in Utah.
Renee Trujillo, News Director, Love News: “We’re in an election year and let’s be realistic here John Saldivar’s name is not the only name coming out of Salt Lake City and it does somehow, I don’t want to say cast a shadow but reminds the people of why PUP was voted out of power back in 2008 because the name of Ralph Fonseca came up in the Dermen trail of receiving money. Has the party thought about how they would respond to something like that ? Granted he’s no longer a part of the executive or anything of that sort but we’re in the year of a general election people will be looking at these things.
Henry Charles, Chairman, People’s United Party: “Well I believe Renee that that is news for – as you said Ralph Fonseca resigned from politics many years ago, he’s a private citizen, he’s a businessman and if he has any issues having to do with the person in question he can resolve those issues on his own, that has nothing to do with the PUP. Ralph Fonseca is not on any ballot but I believe John Saldivar is on the ballot and he is the one that has to answer that.”
Renee Trujillo, News Director, Love News: While you did rightly say that Ralph retired from politics the other name that came up that may pose some challenges for the PUP was Said Musa’s name. Don’t you feel that that perhaps would pose some doubt or some challenges for the party that his name is on a ballot.
Henry Charles, Chairman, People’s United Party: “Be careful what you say there Renee because nobody has alleged that Said Musa has received funds from Lev Dermen. There was a business transaction, the purchase of property from a property, there were two directors of that company, Said Musa was not one of the directors of the company. They are trying to use propaganda to try to include him in it but no please be careful with what you said just now because that is not accurate.”
As for the PUP’s response to the Prime Minister’s actions against Saldivar, the Leader of the Opposition has called it insulting to the Belizean people.
Hon. John Briceno, Opposition Leader, People’s United Party: “What the Prime Minister has done with the issue of John Saldivar is an insult to the Belizean people. He knew all along what was taking place in Utah, he was told. He saw documents that were filed in court and he refused to take action and now that all of this has come to the public, we even found a document today that was in court that was accusing Mr.Kingston of having sex with minors and all sorts of crazy stuff. For him to say that he is going to suspend indefinitely John Saldivar and in effect still keep him as Minister of National Security I think is an insult because he is saying suspension but yet John Saldivar in his release to the media he is saying that he is still the Minister of National Security; I find that insulting and that the Prime Minister despite everything refuses to look at the facts and to act.”
As we mentioned, the PUP is having a press conference tomorrow morning and we will bring you the highlights of their presentation in tomorrow’s newscast.
