PUP says that Net Vasquez must be removed

With a cloud of seeming corruption and irregularities hanging over the Barrow administration the People’s United Party is now calling for the resignation of Nestor Vasquez from all other governmental agencies.

With a cloud of seeming corruption and irregularities hanging over the Barrow administration the People’s United Party is now calling for the resignation of Nestor Vasquez from all other governmental agencies.  While Vasquez has only resigned from Belize Telemedia Limited as Chairman for abusing the company’s credit card, Vasquez ironically, remains on the Integrity Commission as well as on the Social Security Board’s Investment Committee and the Central Bank of Belize.  The PUP issued a release earlier saying that they are appalled at the allegations against Vasquez and his audacity to act against the Belizean people.  The political party added that, “Vasquez’s arrogant, frivolous resignation as Chairman of BTL makes clear that he has no remorse at having been caught using company’s monies for his own private entertainment, allegedly to the tune of almost half a million dollars. What is also clear from Government’s inaction to this point is that there will be all attempts to sweep the matter under the rug to protect Vasquez.”  The release goes on demanding for his resignation from all senior positions and for an audit to be done to determine the precise extravagance and misappropriations at BTL with a view to pursue criminal action.  Copies of the credit card statement for a portion of 2019 shows Vasquez purportedly racking up charges at the expense of BTL. The transactions on the card are showing multiple cash withdrawals along with purchases made in Chetumal, Mexico.  In one instance, a charge for over one thousand three hundred US dollars was made at Liverpool in Chetumal while a charge for over five hundred US dollars was made at Sally’s Beauty Shop also in Chetumal.  It is uncertain how long Vasquez was on this spending spree but we have gotten records dating back to 2018 showing multiple withdrawals of three thousand Belize dollars as well as a charge at a Macy’s outlet in Florida for over three hundred US dollars.  Information reaching our newsroom indicate that the investigation is ongoing and that Belize Telemedia Limited should be naming an interim Chairman today following a meeting of the Board of Governors.  We will keep you posted.
