PUP Selects Mayoral Candidates and Council Slates in Benque Viejo and Twin Towns

Yesterday, delegates of the People’s United Party in Cayo voted in two conventions to elect the municipal slates for Benque Viejo and the Twin Towns. Both were held to elect six councilor candidates for upcoming municipal elections in Benque and in San Ignacio/ Santa Elena. The party endorsed Mathew Preston, a current councilor for SI/SE, as the Mayoral Candidate for the Twin Towns, and Jorge Rosales, Benque’s current mayor, was endorsed for a second term. After ballots were tallied in SI/SE, Zahir Figueroa, Jose Awe, Aaron Mai, Rita Defour, Shirlene Neal, and Omar Rodriguez were selected to join Preston’s slate. While in Benque, Shamir Pulido, Jenny Martinez, Edgar Cocom, Pio Vachia, Carlos Iglesias, and Rosita Cruz were elected as the six to join Rosales’ slate. In both conventions, there were young people, who went out in numbers, as noted by PUP Stalwart Don Hector Silva. He spoke to Love News about yesterday’s conventions and the significance of youth joining politics. 

The People’s United Party also held its convention in Benque Viejo del Carmen over the weekend.  The 7-hour convention saw fourteen candidates making up two slates.  In the end, 860 votes were cast.  Shamir Pulido topped the polls with 430 votes while Jenny Martinez came in second with 415 votes.  The other 4 winning candidates were Edgar Cocom, Pio Vachia, Carlos Iglesias and Rosita Cruz.  The convention was presided by Justice of the Peace, Danny Madrid and PUP’s Deputy Secretary General, Collet Montejo.
