The Elections and Boundaries Commission today confirmed what Love News reported yesterday: PUP Senator Collet Montejo has been appointed as the field supervisor for the re-districting exercise. A statement from the Commission says Montejo (quote) “as supervisor of all fieldwork for the gathering and providing of all information for the consideration of the task force regarding the transport and other facilities of the divisions and as to its physical features and the distribution of the population throughout Belize” (end of quote). Reacting to this Leader of the Opposition, Moses “Shyne” Barrow who told our newsroom that (quote) “This is a lamentable day for Democracy. To have the current PUP Government Senator and former PUP Secretary General Collet Montejo be selected to supervise the redistricting exercise is an atrocious decision to politicize an undertaking that should be left to objective upright professionals whose sole interest is equal representation for the people of Belize.” End of quote. Barrow says that Belizeans should see this as nothing more than an attempt at gerrymandering. He says that there are many qualified professionals with no political agenda that could have been selected to discharge this exercise. The UDP is calling on the Elections and Boundaries Commission to reverse the decision.
