PUP Unveils Mayoral Candidate for Belmopan

The son of the late and former Government Minister, Agripino Cawich, is the PUP Mayoral candidate for Belmopan.  Pablo Cawich is leading a slate of several newcomers in the capital city, and is preparing to address issues in several areas, including Salvapan and Maya Mopan.  He appeared on The Whip Talk Show this morning where he introduced his slate, and spoke of his intentions once elected.

Pablo Cawich, PUP Mayoral Candidate (Belmopan): “One of the first things that we tried to look at, the first criteria was that the zone where we would want them to represent one of the things I learned when starting to set up the team I had started walking as I naturally recall. But this was not my first run. I had run previously in 2021 at the convention level and during that campaign and moving forward continuing discussions with the residents I learned that they sometimes felt like they didn’t have that voice in the council coming from a unionistic background our approach has is being focused on distributed representation. So that’s one of the main things we wanted to ensure that this time the council had representation distributed across the city so nobody feels left out. That along with the different disciplines that the team has makes us very dynamic.”

Chris Enriquez, one of the councilor candidates has reportedly been able to attract several young voters and residents of Belmopan. He spoke of his reason for entering politics, and what he hopes to achieve.

Chris Enriquez, PUP Councilor Candidate (Belmopan): “I’d like to embrace this moment because for me I like to say that I want to continue to encourage youths. One of the main things is that youths tend to shun away from politics and I want to encourage us to be a part of politics because it’s very important for us to be inclusive for a greater development moving forward because you may know we are majority of the population and so if we don’t take a stand now and get involved now then we have to settle with what we get in the future and so it’s important for us to be a part of it now to help build the community and the nation that we want to see. I’m a people centric individual  and so I connect well with people. Everyone likes to tell me that I seem a bit shy which I’m not shy but the feedback from the community is very good. They are very encouraging of me especially as a youth to be a part of politics and for me I’m a fresh face I had no political affiliation.”

The slate will run in the municipals in March 2024
