PUP’s Francis Fonseca Slams Tracy Panton’s Budget Address as Weak and Lazy

The 50-minute address by the Leader of the Opposition, Tracy Panton, was lackluster when compared to previous presentations from the opposing side.  It is an observation that Area Representative for Freetown, Francis Fonseca, was bold enough to highlight.  The PUP representative expressed disappointment in her budget rebuttal especially considering that it was her maiden address.  Fonseca didn’t hold back, labelling Panton’s presentation as “weak and lazy,” and suggesting that many of her talking points seemed to have come straight from Google. 

Francis Fonseca, Minister of Foreign Affairs: “I have to say that I was very disappointed though with her presentation. She started out saying that she had a stated desire to differentiate herself, stated desire to be different than her predecessor which would not have been too hard but she failed to achieve that. She said we’re not here to just criticize and oppose, we’re here to be fair and balanced and so. But the absolute betrayal of that desire as this stated desire was almost immediate when she started to talk. What followed in her presentation was the usual empty, hollow, rhetoric, this dark meaningless rhetoric which offered no vision for the country, not one plan for the country. She said nothing about what the UDP could do and would do. No plan for the country, no vision. No ideas. No solutions. Typical UDP. So in my view it was a very weak, a very lazy response. And I say that to say before anybody says you’re saying the lady is weak or lazy, I said that about the former leader too. His responses were always weak and lazy. No thought or effort, that’s what I mean. No thought or effort had gone into the preparation of their presentation. Just a lot of googling. You could see a lot of google thing extracted and pasted, cut and paste of googling. ChatGPT no.”

This afternoon, outside the chambers at the George Price Center, Panton responded to Fonseca’s remarks, doubling down on her position. 

Tracy Panton, Leader of the Opposition: “It was my responsibility. I wanted to set a new tone. I had to lay out the broad macro policy issues that were glaringly not in the  budget.  A budget, as I said before, it’s not just a  ledger of numbers. It is a social contract that the government makes with the people of Belize.  And what’s in the budget really outlines a government’s priorities. So what is not in the budget is indicative of where,  of the government’s commitment or non-commitment to the people of the country.  That was certainly,  I think the Minister of Foreign Affairs’  assessment of my  presentation is certainly ill-placed. I have put in a lot of work in critically looking at the policy issues that not only affect lives, but the livelihoods  of our Belizeans. That is our responsibility to look at where we can strengthen a system that is supposed to be built for the well-being of our human capital in this country.”

Panton added that she believes the budget fell short in key areas such as education, housing, and heath.
