The Government of Belize, through the Ministry of Infrastructure Development and Housing (MIDH), has commenced rehabilitation works on the Thomas Vincent Ramos (TV Ramos) Highway, just north of Silk Grass Village, as part of ongoing efforts to improve road safety and extend the lifespan of critical transportation infrastructure. According to a public notice issued on January 21, the project involves the application of a hot-mix asphalt overlay, aimed at strengthening the existing roadway and improving driving conditions for motorists. MIDH reports that works have been progressing in a timely manner since commencement. During the rehabilitation process, engineers identified several compromised sections of the highway where persistent moisture retention and settlement in deeper pavement layers had weakened the road’s structural foundation. These conditions have contributed to recurring surface cracks and potholes. As a corrective measure, the Ministry has determined that full-depth pavement reconstruction is required in the affected areas to ensure long-term durability and safety. MIDH noted that since this portion of the highway remains within its defects period, the Ministry is taking advantage of the contractor’s presence on site to carry out the necessary repairs immediately, helping to safeguard public investment and avoid future disruptions. While every effort is being made to minimize inconvenience to road users, motorists are being urged to exercise caution when traveling through active construction zones. The Ministry is reminding drivers to reduce speed, be courteous to other road users, and drive with due care and attention. The rehabilitation of the TV Ramos Highway forms part of the government’s broader commitment to improving national road networks and enhancing transportation safety across Belize.
