World renowned biologist and conservationist Jeff Corwin is in Belize this week for the celebration of the Belize Zoo and Tropical Education Center’s 40th anniversary. Corwin, known for shows such as Going Wild with Jeff Corwin on Disney Channel and the Jeff Corwin experience on Animal Planet, arrived in Belize today ahead of the anniversary event taking place on Saturday, June 3. Corwin will be the special guest to unveil the new otter exhibit at the zoo and will also be a speaker at the Wild Tales dinner being held on Saturday evening, in honor of the late Sharon Matola, the Zoo’s founder.
This weekend’s event at the Belize Zoo will have a notably missing seat since the Founder, Sharon Matola, has transitioned. Corwin, shared some of his fond memories of Matola, honoring the conservation icon for her role in connecting thousands of people from around the world with the wild life of Belize. He described his latest trip to Belize to honor his late friend as “bitter-sweet.”
Celso Poot, director of the Belize Zoo, said the two activities planned for tomorrow are the latest in a series of activities planned to continue the Zoo’s outreach to people in Belize and beyond. The 40th anniversary celebration will run from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and is free for all Belizeans.
