While Belizeans are fearing the Covid-19 strain of the coronavirus there are some residents in Belize City who are more concerned over another form of respiratory illness they are at risk of contracting.  Over the weekend we reported of a building being restored that has its roof made of asbestos.  Asbestos is a mineral that has been proven to cause cancer and other respiratory illnesses.  Yesterday, there were reports that persons are removing the asbestos in a truck without any protective gear, which is dangerous to health as well as illegal. A concerned resident has stated that there was already a stop order for the renovations but the work continued.

Our newsroom tried getting a comment from the Department of Environment but we were given the runaround.  Our efforts in this regard will resume tomorrow.
