Retaliation Feared in Wake of Fatal Shooting in Belize City

Tonight, police in Belize City are bracing for retaliation after a well-known street figure and an innocent teen were gunned down. Last night, the silence of a quiet night in the Jane Usher area was shattered by the reverberations of gunshots. And when the noise subsided, two people were found lying motionless on the pavement. One of the victims was well known to police, while the other was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.  Reporter Vejea Alvarez tells us more.

15-year-old Lamisha Moody

Vejea Alvarez, Love News: An innocent bystander and an infamous street figure are dead and their alleged murderers are in police custody. Minutes before 9 o’clock on Wednesday, 15-year-old Lamisha Moody and Troy “Trio” Hyde were buying at Patricia Shop at the corner of Mudd and Curl Thompson Streets when Hyde was targeted. Police say three gunmen alighted an SUV and unleashed a barrage of bullets on the 36-year-old; however, in the chaos, Moody was also shot several times. The victims both made attempts to escape but collapsed on the pavement. Moody’s grandmother, Shernand Sutherland, says she had just seen her a few hours before and is still processing her tragic death.

Shernand Sutherland, Grandmother of Lamisha Moody: “As I got into the yeard a little after she came in her uniform and she asked me “Granny you don’t have anything to eat ?” so I told her “Lamisha you want something to eat ?” She said “Yes granny.” I told her right now. I went upstairs and I got her the food. So when I got her the food now a little while afterwards I said “Lamisha, Lamisha !” they said Lamisha went home so I said “Lamisha went home already ?”

Vejea Alvarez, Love News: Little did Sutherland know that it would have been the last time she saw Lamisha Alive. She says she was within shouting distance of the shooting when she got the news from a neighbor and rushed out.

Shernand Sutherland, Grandmother of Lamisha Moody: “So when we ran out I asked her “Out so ?” she said “No, back so.” and she said they had already rushed her to the hospital. So me and my daughter we ran, we ran as far as we could to get a taxi. We met her next family in a taxi and they put us in and we went to the hospital. Her mother sent her to the next shop to get foam plates because according to they said she was supposed to go on a trip today so her mother sent her to get the foam plate to put the food in she said.”

Vejea Alvarez, Love News: By all accounts, Moody was an incident bystander who was caught in the crosshairs of a feud among men. But why were Hyde and his attackers at odds? Commissioner of Police Chester Williams says that what investigators are working to find out.

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police: “At this time we have the vehicle we believe was used in that particular incident and the owner of that vehicle is detained for questioning.”

Reporter: Is it more personal than gang related ? Are you able to say ?

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police: “Well we have two theories. One can be intergang rivalry and one can be an external gang that came in to do the incident. So we’re looking at both theories at this time.”

Vejea Alvarez, Love News: Hyde was no stranger to police; he was once a reported gang figure who was accused of murder in 2015 and survived an attempt on his life in 2014. Nonetheless, Williams says he was trying to change his life. March last year, Hyde was among several men who marched for peace in honor of the late William Dawson.

Troy “Trio” Hyde

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police: “I know that Troy Hyde does have his past but certainly we were seeing a more positive trend coming from him in the community working with the LIU program and trying to see how best we could have used him to try and make the area as calm as can be and I think that you as members of the media can attest to the fact that if we look at Jane Usher now to what it was a couple years ago it’s like night and day. This area was very prone to shootings, very prone to murders but over the past few months and even up to a year we have had little to no activity in this area and he was a big part of that. So his death is certainly going to be a loss not just to his family but certainly to the wider community.”

Vejea Alvarez, Love News: And the heavy hearts of persons in the community have only been exacerbated by Moody’s tragic passing. The student of Anglican Cathedral College was only a stone’s throw away from her home when she was senselessly killed. For her family, her murder feels like a nightmare turned reality.

Shernand Sutherland, Grandmother of Lamisha Moody: “My last daughter called me and she started to tell me about a dream she got. And the exact dream that she told me she got that is exactly what happened right ? The dream that she got like right after she got that dream about her niece Lamisha and she got off the phone with me I heard this heavy sound but I said gunshots don’t sound like that so I continued relaxing on my bed until when I heard the hollering out here you know ? “Lamisha got shot.”

Vejea Alvarez, Love News: Sutherland says that while Moody is gone, her memories and jovial personality will live on.

Shernand Sutherland, Grandmother of Lamisha Moody: “She was nice. Everybody talked about her. Everybody talked about her. She wouldn’t pass this one, she wouldn’t pass that one without hailing them you know ? She said when she graduated she wanted to be a lawyer. She wanted to be a lawyer. So they took her too early.”

Vejea Alvarez, Love News: Police have since bolstered their patrol efforts in the area in hopes of preventing any retaliatory actions. Vejea Alvarez, Love News.
