Rising Sea Levels Impact Coastal Communities in Belize City

Belize is feeling the impact of climate change as rising sea levels and flooding continue to affect numerous coastal communities. In Belize City, sea walls in various areas have been eroded and are now less effective. One example is in Caribbean Shores near the municipal airport, where water is now creeping into yards. The Area Representative, Kareem Musa, explained that the issue was brought to his attention and says he is working to address it.

Kareem Musa, Minister of Home Affairs: “Huge concern, as you can see with global warming that has taken place over the years, that area that is affectionately known as the hangar area of our constituency, whenever it is October we do notice that the very high tides and the waves come in and actually go over the seawall, what is left of the seawall. And so I spoke with the Minister of Infrastructure this morning when I saw the videos and we will be making a request for the ministry to intervene and hopefully come up with a plan not just to fix the streets but to fix the entire seashore area in the hangar area of Belize City.”
