Running W Brand Meats has announced its withdrawal from this year’s National Agriculture and Trade Show (NATS), citing a national shortage of live pigs that has disrupted supply chains and driven up pork prices. In a statement issued today, the company pointed to “excessive exportation” as the primary cause of the shortage, warning of the potential impact on local food security. Running W has long been considered a staple of the annual NATS, drawing large crowds with its signature meats and culinary displays. Their absence has left many disappointed. Attendees have taken to social media to express frustration, with some even saying they are no longer interested in attending the event. Beyond public disappointment, the situation has brought to the surface growing concerns about Belize’s food security. With pork shortages becoming more apparent, questions are being raised about whether the country is sustainably managing its agricultural exports. In an excerpt posted via the Running W Social Media, Director of Tiger Run Farms, Escander Bedran explained that we must begin reevaluating how we balance foreign demand with local needs.
The shortage of pork is also noticeable with the inability for Running W to produce ham on the local market during Christmas time.
