Rural Community Development Officers Receive Training in Underwater Detection Techniques

Rural Community Development officers will no longer be drilling tirelessly in an effort to find underground water.  Over fifteen Rural Community Development Officers increased their skills in underwater detection through a capacity building exercise.  A five-day training session on how to use electrical resistivity technology for geophysical water detection is being conducted this week in several villages.  According to the Coordinator in the Department of Rural Transformation, Elsa Cardinez, water-drilling is carried out sporadically based on information from residents, however, the use of this equipment will lead to more accurate results.  It detects the presence of ground water by measuring the amount of resistance to the electrical flow.

The training is being conducted by Research Associate Professor from the University of Houston, Dr. Robert Wiley.  The week-long session is geared at enabling the Rural Transformation Department to carry out its mandate of providing potable water to the rural areas of Belize.

Cardinez says that through this method, the department will be able to deliver on its mandate in a fashion that reduces the waste of resources.
