Safe School Zone Project Enhances Student Safety in Belize City

Students at Buttonwood Bay Nazarene Primary School on Coney Drive, Belize City, may be a bit safer getting to and from school as new enhanced traffic safety measures are being implemented in the area. Today the Ministry of Economic Development launched the Safe School Zone Pilot Project, inaugurating the new enhanced features. The project saw the installation of two additional speed bumps on approach to the school, upgraded signage, and the installation of poles prohibiting parking on the roadside near the school which also creates a safe walking space for students. Dr. Osmond Martinez, CEO of the Ministry, explained that the school was selected for the pilot project because a study concluded that it had the highest level of vehicular traffic in the area during peak hours. He added that studies are being conducted at schools in northern Belize in preparation for the project’s expansion.

Area Representative for Caribbean Shores, Kareem Musa, explained that Coney Drive has become a well-trafficked commercial area, and as such the safety precautions have become a necessity.

Avril Arthurs, Principal of Buttonwood Bay Nazarene Primary School said that the enhanced safety measures were much needed as there have been several instances where students were almost injured due to motorists driving recklessly. She added that a parent was injured some years ago, which further emphasized the need for intervention to address the dangers in the heavily trafficked area.

This morning’s launch is a part of the Second Road Safety Project under the Ministry of Economic Development.
