San Ignacio has become the home of the newest U-Space location. U-Space is a community-driven initiative designed to foster digital literacy and encourage experimentation with technology and culture. Moreover, it is geared toward providing a creative space for young minds to develop innovative solutions for the challenges of today and tomorrow. Area Representative of Cayo Northeast, Orlando Habet, highlighted the critical need to engage young people, particularly young women, in fields such as robotics, information and communication technologies (ICTs), and other transformative disciplines.
The launch of U-Space comes at a pivotal time, as Belize continues to navigate the challenges and opportunities of the digital age. By focusing on robotics, ICTs, and other cutting-edge fields, the initiative aims to bridge the gender gap in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) and empower young women to take on leadership roles in these areas. UNICEF Belize, a key partner in the initiative, reiterated its commitment to supporting youth development in Belize.
The collaboration was done between the Science and Technology Unit of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Science and Technology (MoECST), the National Institute of Culture and History (NICH), the Belize National Library Service and Information System, and UNICEF Belize
