There has been much controversy surrounding the Governor-General, Her Excellency Froyla Tzalam receiving a salary raise at one of Belize’s toughest economic times. Her salary recently went from an estimated fifty-three thousand dollars per year to seventy-five thousand dollars per year. Her allowances went from just over two thousand dollars to twelve thousand dollars per year. In addition, a house is being rented for the 50-year-old head of state and her family as repairs are planned for the Belize House. Over the weekend while in San Pedro Town, Reporter Vejea Alvarez took to the streets and asked the residents how they felt; here is what he gathered.
The Public Service Union (PSU) has appealed to the Governor General to decline the increase, at least until the economy stabilizes. It is a live issue to date and we will keep you posted.
