San Pedro Residents Raise Concerns about Alleged Dredging Activity

Residents from San Pedro Ambergris Caye have been raising questions regarding dredging occurring on the island. There are reports that persons are dumping sand into a swamp area on private land, which they feel could pose negative environmental impacts. The Minister of Sustainable Development, Orlando Habet, explains that the town council had applied for environmental clearance to undergo a project, which was approved, and a private company was hired to carry out the task.

Hon. Orlando Habet, Minister of Sustainable Development, Climate Change and Disaster Risk Management: “I’m not certain which project it is but I know that there was some questions regarding one which the town council had applied for and if that’s the same one I think town council had sought environmental clearance from the Department of Environment. So I think a private company is doing the work but it’s being instituted and done through the town council.”
