Stakeholders in San Pedro Town are coming together to strengthen the island community’s defenses against climate change and natural disasters. The Ministry of Blue Economy and Marine Conservation, led a training session this week in collaboration with the National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO), and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, or FAO. The partnership is focused on increasing resilience within San Pedro’s crucial coastal zone and fisheries sector. This involves improving resource management, supporting local livelihoods, enhancing disaster preparedness, and raising public awareness. Central to this effort is a Disaster Risk Management and Climate Change Engagement Workshop. This workshop aims to produce tangible results for San Pedro, including the creation of a tailored Community-Based Disaster Risk Management Plan. Participants are also working to develop a specific strategy and action plan for engaging the San Pedro community on climate change and disaster risk issues, complete with methods to track progress. Organizers state the overall objectives are clear: First, to increase the understanding of climate change adaptation and disaster management for both national officials and community members. Second, to build the practical response capabilities of those officials and coastal residents. And third, to specifically equip fisher folk with the knowledge and skills needed for disaster risk management and climate-resilient livelihoods.
